Does the follower counter work on private accounts?

The lookup reads the public profile only. If Threads marks the account as private, this page still shows that status and any follower count the public profile returns. It does not load posts or replies from a private account, because those are not part of this public snapshot.

How current is the Threads follower count?

The number is a snapshot of the public profile at the moment you run the lookup. Threads updates counts on its own schedule, so a later check can show a different number. This page does not store a history of past follower counts.
